Infiniti is distinctively more luxurious than nissan cars, for instance. I know Lincoln is the luxury brand but where does Mercury fit in wrt to Ford?

mercury usually comes with more standard features. i haven't seen one in person but my guess would be that the mercury milan would have better interiors than the ford fusion.

I really think Ford should kill off Mercury. They should just keep Ford and Lincoln.

Well, I have been curious about that as well. Same goes to Dodge/Chrysler..

Maybe because of brand history/image, but I think they should clear up the mess, just like GM did with Oldsmobile. Or at least differencitate them. Why Chrysler 300 & Dodge Charger should compete each other in similar price range? How about Dodge Avenger & Chrysler Sebring?

And Ford's mess must be worse than Chrysler's. They keep making bunch of similar cars with different emblem.

IMO, they're exactly the same cars. I guess Mercury might come with more standard stuff, but otherwise the vehicles are identical to those of Ford's.

Yep Kinda liek GMC and Pontiac go together a lot so does Lincoln and Mercury. Helps sells at those lots and also pressures the other dealers to deal better.

Ford is the bread and butter brand. It's the brand for blue-collar families.

Mercury was supposed to be a "junior Lincoln"; the brand for someone who hasn't quite reached the point of buying a Lincoln yet, but who is better off than someone who is buying a Ford. They've become an upmarket Ford anymore though.

Lincoln, of course, is the high-end of Ford's range.

Mercury is only still around these days so Lincoln dealers can have a "lower buck" brand. There really is no difference between Mercury's and Fords now...other than some very slight restyling.

Styling tastes.

Some people like one, others like the other. Doesn't cost much to make two different front fascias.

I thought the saucy mercury spokeswoman was to appeal to men?
