Is there any coffee that can even compare to 100% Kona?

I bought a few bags of 100% Kona whole beans when I was in Hawaii last time. I only started drinking it now, and WOW, this stuff is good. My pre-ground 8 O'clock 100% Columbian can't hold a stick to this stuff.

Is there any coffee available in the stores that can even come close to 100% Kona? FYI I'm not a fan of the bright, acidic varieties of coffee.

Tough comparison there. I like fresh Kona coffee (especially Peaberry beans), but you're comparing freshly ground beans to pre-ground discount coffee. Of course the taste is going to be better.

Kona is pretty good...but a bit mellow...i probably wouldn't want to drink it everyday.

Yes. Jamaican Blue Mountain, but Kona is very very close, and for the price, I can't justify JBM.

Always been a fan of dogs myself, but horses provide a more volumous experience that works better for hot cocoa.

Yeah they sell JBM here in the local coffee shops... $200/lb.

I think they'll brew you a single cup of it for about $6. I've been tempted to at least try it.

Yes, there is plenty. A great Kona can be hard to beat, but if you dislike the brightness of many high altitude coffees, I would concentrate on some South Americans. Mexico has a lot of qualities similar to Kona in some ways with a very balanced cup. Oaxaca in particular often has a really nice crop that can give you some Kona qualities.

I would look for coffees that are wet-processed as a start. Most Kona is still wet-processed, but I believe some are trying dry-processing and a mixture of the two processes. You could also look to Brazilian coffee as it tends to be rather mild. You'll find a similar mild flavor to many of them.

And preground anything is a waste of time. If there was any nuance to the coffee, you likely lost it while it's sitting in a bag (or whatever; it doesn't matter). A fresh roasted, grind-on-demand coffee will always beat the preground nonsense.

That is a ridiculous price and complete highway robbery. That's like the Noka of coffee.

JBM is good coffee, but keep in mind there is a lot of counterfeit out there.

Either prices have gone up in the last few years or they're really trying to screw people. IIRC, it was $50/lb back in 2003.
If you've never had it I'd spring $6 for a cup, though.

I love real Kona but its expensive and I prefer it green so I can roast myself. I don't roast my own beans anymore though. I am drinking a celebes coffee lately which is very good. Lightly aged, bright, and acidic yet still has a bit of rich nuttiness. Believe it or not I have also been drinking a decent organic colombian coffee. Med roasted.

My gf wants to get me one of those Kuerig coffee makers. While very convenient, I have to admit it tastes like crap. Every coffee I tried in there tastes like garbage. I simply use a french press. It's messy but it's the best imo. Any opinions about those Keurig's?

One of my clients has a couple of Keurigs in their office. My good friend ended up buying one for his wife. He does both tea and coffee in it.

For someone that is a little obsessive about their coffee like me, it's not a good option. For the vast majority of people though, the person that just wants that nice cup of coffee in the morning before they get to work, it's a really great option.

I find the coffees vary very little in flavor. It's either light roast to dark roast, with only the roast flavors really shining through. I forget which capsule it was, but there was a Peaberry (I think) that actually had hints of a really good cup of coffee.

The quality of coffee in the US has been increased by orders of magnitude by these pod/capsule machines. If you're willing to mess with a press pot though, it's probably not for you.
