I'm sure I can hear there's a mouse living in a dresser in the basement and I would rather like to catch the little guy and put him in a aquarium, mostly out of scientific curiosity, since it's the first mouse I've ever seen/heard in my life, but also out of religious reasons, I no longer kill animals if I can. Is there a common household chemical of combination of chemicals I can use to knock out the little guy for a while so I can capture it?

just make a trap box. box that is half open balanced with a stick, next to a piece of cheese. mouse touches cheese, tips stick over = box closes.

They sell catch and release traps. They work ok, we caught a few mice that way in my house in NY.

I don't want to catch and release it, I just want to study it. I don't care if you kill a million animals tomorrow, that's fine by me, natural selection et al, but I've never seen a mouse in real life.
As for my views on killing, no I won't kill something unless I have a good reason. Food is fine. Hunting for food is fine. Randomly killing things, not my thing. I've gone hunting before. I've killed my share of animals for food and I love guns, but I'm not going to shoot a mouse with a 9mm.
I might try that, I do have some high sugar hersheys kisses and fruit available. Mice actually don't like cheese, they prefer foods high in sugar and starches.

From what I can tell it sounds very, very active and healthy and causing a hell of a lot of commotion. That and I live in IL so Hanta Virus isn't exactly common. Also Hanta Virus is hard to transmit, being of the Ebola family. Seronegative mice living in the same cage as Seropositive mice for months can remain seronegative.
Trust me, I think I have the mouse beat as far as natural selection goes.

actually, this is how i've caught mice in the past. grab a cardboard box and fold the flaps inward. take a little strip of wood and balance it on opposite flaps so pushing lightly on it causes the strip to fall into the box. make a little ramp that leads up to the box, and put some cereal on the ramp, and some on the little strip of wood. mouse runs up the ramp, onto the strip and its weight pushes the flaps apart and the strip of wood falls into the box along with the mouse. make sure the box is big enough that it can't just jump out.

I'd really advise against spending time near it. Those critters can carry some fun pathogens and parasites.
Visit a pet store if you really want to see a mouse. They're at least captive-bred, and won't have nearly as many fun diseases.
And sure, if I could diplomatically encourage rodents to live somewhere other than inside my apartment, I would. Alas, that method is not possible, thus they get to enjoy one last meal before a brisk SNAP takes care of them. There will be thousands more in short order.
Curious, do you use antibiotics? Kill fruit flies or horse flies? Cook food to kill parasites? I do wonder where the line is drawn for kill/no-kill in that kind of situation.

Keeping your environment sanitary is an excellent reason to kill things. My advice would be to get a neck-snapper and get rid of that mouse.
If you want a pet you can buy a feeder mouse at a pet shop pretty cheap.
I'm a fairly laid back Theravada Buddhist so I try not to kill things or cause undue harm if I don't have a reason to to. I can justify killing it for food and I can justify killing it for defense or some other reason, but I won't kill something just for the sake of killing it (unless it's a millipede/centipede/slug/caterpillar/worm/grub, I have a phobia of those things). Antibiotics/flies/parasites? Sure. Fish? Why the hell not? Veal? Absolutely delicious. Venison? Makes great jerky.
As for this mouse thing, I'm just more curious than anything else. I've really never seen a wild mouse before, I'd just like to study it and see how feral mice behave different differently from domesticated rodents. I've had a hamster before when I was young and I'd like to see how a wild mouse would act differently.

It'll probably just be a lot more skittish, and may panic if it finds itself in a place it can't escape from. Captive-bred mice have never known predators, and probably have had a lot of it bred out of them. Put one in a cage with a snake, and it seems to have an inkling that something is amiss, but it doesn't quite seem to know what.
