Is there any chance that China will attack/invade Taiwan when we attack Iraq?

China really has no use of Taiwan, and the only reason they make annual threats is to maintain some type of status quo and maintain prestige. Truth is, both sides are fairly weary of the whole issue. Also, the US Pacific fleet has over 1000 modern aircrafts.

Which is why we are going to see little help from the Chinese over the NK situation. China would love to see a decrease in US influence in Asia. NK is perfect for this. There is virtually no chance that China is in direct danger, so they can sit back and watch the drama unfold.

I think the world powers are going to wait until the US in deeply involved with Iraq. Then the following things will happen:

1) China will invade Taiwan, thinking we are too busy to do anything about it.
2) North Korea will drop a nuke on Japan and then level Seoul with artillery fire, and then invade South Korea.
3) France will surrender.

if china invaded taiwan, they would destroy the taiwanese economy, effectly nulling the advantages of taking control of the country. Furthermore, an american attack will be imminent (probably with UN backing). Finally, that will destroy the chinese economy because there will be a global embargo on chinese items. I doubt the chinese are that stupid.

Nope, no UN backing... China is on the security concil and will veto any action.

hehe, i found that really funny =P

imagine china taking over taiwan, then sending a chinese rep to the security council just to veto everything.

ahhh, then you must've forgotten about the korean war when china and the soviet union were on the security council. North Korea invaded and it was the UN that pushed them back. The Chinese helped the North Koreans in that conflict. How come China and the Soviets didn't vote against the resolution authorizing force then? Find out.

No. But if we do something about North Korea, Chiina will probably do something w/ Taiwain to offset things.

In 1950, the UN recognized Chiang Kai-shek?s government in Taiwan as the representative of China. Because of that fact, the Soviet Union boycotted the UN, so their veto power wasn't relevant.

I still don't think China has the transportation logistics to get enough troops into Taiwan.

They don't need large # of troops in Taiwan at the beggining. They simply need to bomb the living sh!t out of Taiwan and then start sending troops. Taiwan will prolly destroy 1 or 2 cities, but it wouldn't last long 🙁

they don't really need armored transports. I mean, they can just tap into their HUGE local fisheries and board merchant ships and just swarm the entire taiwan coast. Sure a ton of troops might be lost in the process, but they have the population to spare. That's the communist way!

China will attack if and only if Taiwan declares independence. That being said, I don't think Taiwan has got the balls of steel to declare independence in the near future.

US-backed Taiwan had the Chinese seat in the UN. The soviet ambassador to the UN was boycotting that action. Taking advantage of this, the United States quickly set up a vote for UN backed resolution to save South Korea. Never again did the Soviets allow themselves to miss a security council vote.

Remember, that before 9-11, the big stink in the Chinese news was how our American propeller-driven Spyplane (with like 6 people on board) deliberately crashed into a Chinese fighter JET. Nevermind that the Chinese planes have a history of buzzing our planes. Nevermind that the Chinese pilot had a history of risky flybys.

A heckuva lot of Chinese (and Chinese-Americans) actually believed that story (I know several). The Chinese goverment is NOT our friend, nor are they above lying. Yes, all governments lie, but this story really stretches reality.

And you take every word the US-government spews as teh holy truth? Its not the like the US government has not lied to get its political ways (Tonkin/USS Maine for a set of 2).

Frankly, I dont believe either government. I think the planes were too close together and due to pilot error, they crashed into each other. I highly doubt that some fighter pilot would sacrifice his life just to make a point. And also, its also been known large American warplanes (bombers, etc) like to perform dangerous counter-maneuvers to the "buzzing" since the Soviet era.

Did you not read my post? I did not say that the US government never lies. In fact, I stated that "all governments lie." Somehow, between your myopia and your stupidity, you interpreted my statement to mean that I "take every word the US-government spews as teh (sic) holy truth."

Did I say that the Chinese pilot deliberately rammed our plane? NO. NO. NO. Read the post again. Use your glasses and your brain this time.

I do agree with your assessment that the planes collided because of pilot error.
