Is there any better value than a 5 GB 1st-gen ipod for $149?

I'm about to purchase the 5 GB ipod for $149. Is there anything that's a better deal that I should look at? I really want to spend <$200. It's just music....

Edit: That looks like an MP3CD player. I already have one of those, I need something smaller and with more capacity easily accessible, i.e I don't have to keep swapping CDs

Yea, a 5GB 1st gen iPod for $100, including a 3rd party carrying case.;) If you're looking for an iPod, don't do the eBay thing, as the demand tends to drive up prices(although $150 isn't too out of tune for an iPod, it seems), and instead look for smaller websites that do FS/FT stuff, that way the price isn't sent through the roof.

<-- Happy $100 iPod owner :p

I've been looking in FS/FT, no one wants to let them go for <$150 and when I try to negotiate down to a bare iPod down to $125 (arguging that I can get it $150 from Apple with a 1 yr warrenty and headphones) I get called a lowballer.

Humm, looking around, even I can't find something better than $149. Just get the Apple refurb; it's going to be of better quality than a 2nd hand one anyhow.

Just throwing it out as an option, I listen to music alot and the Slim-X has been top notch for me, and I don't have to worry about running out of space. Guess it all depends on how you plan on using the player though.

I have a rio volt now It's not as slim but any CD-based mechanism is still cumbersome.

Wow, that's a great price.. Go for it- you won't be sorry.. Just remember that 1st gen ipods are Mac only (you need to do a firmware upgrade or use MacOpener).. Most compact flash mp3 players cost more than that (and come with like 64mb!) so you're not going to get a better deal.. As far as the slimX- I have both and NEVER use the slimX anymore.. It's cool and all but the ipod's superior in almost every way (smaller, more capicity, no need to shuffle CDs, more batter time, faster xFers using firewire vs. burning -i think).. If you didn't have enough money I'd possibly suggest a slimX.. But for $150 you'd be crazy not to get the ipod..

Correction: You DO NOT NEED to use Mac Opener. Simply download Windows firmware update from Apple along with MMJB 7.1 for Ipod and you're all set, that's what I am using and it works like a charm.

Elemental007 - don't bother negotiating for used ipod at $125, for only $25 more you get a virtually brand new unit with 1 year warranty, well worth a litle extra IMHO
