Is there any advantage using a PCI modem over an AMR modem?

IS there an advantage to using a PCI modem instead of an AMR modem? My motherboard supports the AMR modem, I've got an AMR modem and a PCI modem that I can use, and PCI slots are not an issue either. Just curious if there is a technical advantage to using PCI over AMR

Thanks

Its my understanding that AMR are most if not all winmodems in order to confirm to their compact size. Of course PCI modems can be winmodems, but not a requirement.

I have never tried an AMR modem because I have always heard they were flakey. If that has changed, I would sure like to know because they are a good idea. The tiny bit of processor time (comparatively) wouldn't even be noticed on modern machines.

I have just never pursued them because of their issues.

That's exacly what I was wondering...if they were "flakey". I'm just gonna go with PCI

I've had very good connection speed and stability with the AMR/CNR Modems and they are dirt cheap, some have even been included with the purchase of the mb.
I even installed the PCTel AMR Modem and a PCI USR 56K 2976 (OEM) Modem into the same pc ......... just to see if they would work OK ...... independently of each other ........ and they did ....... just fine!

I have found that I can get PCI HSP modems the same price as AMR....but I doubt the difference between the two is noticable whatsoever.

One thing I have found is that HSP + AMR/CNR modems don't have a little speaker generally....HCF ones do...gotta love that dialing noise ;)

My laptop uses a modem similar to an AMR/CNR modem. The ActionTec that came with it was nothing but trouble. Poor Connection speed, dropped connections, random lock ups upon disconnect. :| I got it replaced with a PCTel that has been working perfectly.

BTW, the ActionTec was a HSP modem.

HSF could also has a speaker. the difference between hsf and hcf is hs is a pure software, while hcf is a partly software. HCF has got a DSP chip on the modem to handle some of the modem operation.
