Is there any advanced settings I should enable on my router

HiME

Senior member
I'd like to try and make use of the advanced settings that're on my router to make my network more secure. Which ports, URLs or even keywords that I should block?

My network has around 5 computers with different users, since they're all combined in the same workgroup for sharing files.. Is that considered insecure?

Another question is should DDNS and UPnP be enabled?

Most of it is quite simple, since it is just a matter of simple logic

Which ports, URLs or even keywords that I should block?

Take a deep breather and think for few seconds.

Can you come with few URLs of Sites that you do not want to provide access to?

Yes, put the URLs in.

No, leave it clean.

Another breather and another few seconds.

Can you think about few verbal expressions that you do not want to provide access to.

Yes, put the menu entry.

No, leave it clean.

Another question is should DDNS and UPnP be enabled?

If you use DDNS service, you should enable it.
If you do not know what DDNS service is, trust me you do not need this enabled.

If you an UPnP capable device and you want to allow it to get to the Internet you need to enable it.

What is an UPnP cable device? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play

As for File sharing.

It is not so much of an Internet issue.

However, you should install Software Firewall on each computer. With software Firewall, you can control local Network Traffic, and avoid intentional and Unintentional problems.

Since you are sharing, you want to avoid accidental cross LAN contamination of Viruses and the like.

Therefore, this would be advisable as well, Freeware Security suit for Internet Connection Protection.

In addition, you should learn how to configure and control Sharing permission.

Here there is info about sharing.

I generally block all of the ports on a firewall and only allow select services outbound access. And I also disable UPnP as I think it's more of a security issue than a helpful protocol.
