Is there an MP3 naming standard? i.e. whole CDs

Maetryx here,

I've been messing around with music sharing programs and ripping my own CDs lately. I'm not absolutely new to it or anything like that, just got interested in my music collection again lately.

Anyway, I was wondering if there is an MP3 naming convention. I've seen the following called the Napster naming method:
Metallica - One

But that doesn't indicate an album or a track number. I've also heard people say that they are in the MP3 "scene". Those hardcore people seem to make whole CDs complete with artwork scans and m3u sfv crc etc. Whatever those are.

Everywhere I get mine, it's always formatted as either Band - Track - Song or Track - Band - Song. And I like it that way, the first one especially.

I've rip over 500 cds with this method

band\band - cdname - track# trackname.mp3

all encoded with LAME 3.88 beta1
--abr265 -m s -h --lowpass 19.5 -b160

i use a LAME batch encoder & basically converted to it's method because it's better.

varies for single artist albums or various mixed/compilation albums.

single artist. eg.
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides (02) Hip-Hop.mp3

various eg.
dj Tiesto - In Search of Sunrise (03) Billy Ray Martin - Honey (Chicane Club mix).mp3
- first part is dj name & album name, then track #, then artist & track name.

edit: BOLDED for your reading enjoyment :p ;)

joinT,

So your first example is: artist - album (#) title.mp3
with spaces on either side of the dash and before and after the paranthetical track number, right?

Any chance you want to decode the switches? I think abr is some form of variable bit rate, but what of the rest? Thanks.

ABR = average bit rate. Its not as complex as VBR but its better than CBR. I was going to CBR but ABR gives better results and its almost as fast encoding. You can look it up more on lame's page they give quick defs.

-m s = stereo, not joint stereo. There were some really rare swishing sound with joint stereo.. some people heard it some didn't blah blah... when using 256/320 stereo is betteer... under that joint is better.

-h = high quality I read exactly what it does, but everyone always has it in their command lines

-lowpass 19.5 cuts off the frequencys at 19500hz i can only hear up to 17-18 so i put in a little buffer and cut off the rest

-b 160 doesn't let it use under 160bits for a frame... probably not needed i didn't use it all the time but can't hurt. I doubt a 112bit frame would ever come up with abr but who knows.

I had a big stack of CDs i was going to encode... VBR would have taken too long on my 1ghz athlon... and ABR was just a little bit slower than CBR and gave better results.

correct, sir!

I then keep my mp3's organized in folders by genre & subgenre. This allows me to keep better track of my electronica collection. I have a folder for electronica singles (Vinyl rips are of course - the sweetest find of all :)) & a folder for dj mixes - which include albums mixed by dj's (eg. tiesto - in search of sunrise) - ripped split into seperate tracks, some single mixed album rips ( :disgust: ) but I don't have the album yet so :(, & also many many Live Sets I've downloaded from tranceaddict.com & d2k.dedserver.org

Got over 10gigs of just Trance Live Sets - plus another few gigs of house, progressive
Also got over 10gigs of just Trance singles - plus another 5-6 gigs of house, progressive

Hey guys, thanks for the input. I like joinT's scheme, but I don't know about the genre. Yeah, that sounds good too, the more I think about it. After all, I have my music collection sorted kind of like that anyway. I happen to collect Christian rock, and I have it separate from the secular music. I also separate out the black metal into it's own section, and a few other separate categories. So cool. Thanks again for the suggestions.

If anyone else has so more thoughts on naming conventions, I'd love to read them.
