All i find do -R and my "backups" are all +R

That would be a major annoyance if there isn't

They work with DVD+R, I have heard many people using it for that purpose.

Yes, all HD DVD players work with +R. They don't advertise that fact though, because HD DVD players are made by members of the DVD Forum, and the DVD Forum pushed -R.

If you set the book type on DVD+R to DVD-ROM I've found it works in nearly every modern player.

Well, this doesn't really count as "false advertising", considering the player does more than was advertised.

+R is a format promoted by the +RW Alliance. It is NOT sanctioned by the DVD Forum, and it's the DVD Forum who owns the rights to the DVD standard.

In other words, there is no requirement for a DVD player to support +R at all. Most new ones do, but you can't be sure it's all of them, because +R has nothing to do with the official DVD format.
