Is there an easy way to connect a netbook to a desktop with wi-fi?

Hi, on my home network I can share folders out, etc.

At work there is a laptop I have to use. I do work on my netbook alot, and I have been using a thumbdrive to transfer files. This gets old. I can't make my netbook part of the network at work. Is there a way to make it when they get near each other they automatically connect directly to each other and I can transfer a folder wirelessly directly from the netbook to the laptop and vice versa?

You might be able to swing wifi "ad-hoc" mode. It permits hosts to communicate without an AP.

DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT do this without the expressed written permission of the people that run/own your network. In many organizations it'll get you irrevocably fired forever & evar(!!).

In many places it's considered a major security no-no.

yeah that kind of stuff is what keeps admins up at night. folks bringing in tainted machines. since you'd essentially be masq'ing through your desktop it could set off alarms .

since they've left the usb port on your machine i think they've given you a hint there.

Yup, can't tell you how many times people think their work computer is their personal computer. It is not!

I guess I wasn't clear, I didn't want the netbook to be part of the 'network'. I don't care if it has network access at all. I just wanted an easy way to drag and drop files from one computer to another. . . I 'll just keep thumbdriving it. ..

this. does work know youre doing this already anyway? even for work material, you should stop and make sure its ok. read the policy guidelines or whatever that your place of business has written up

OP, the issue is Not whether it can be done but whether it is allowed.

Your question about it indicates that you are Not savvy in this matter, and thus are "Dangerous" to the Network if you try to manipulate component that are network related on your own.

Maybe see if they'll let you use one of those USB to USB connections? I've not tried them so this is a shot in the dark, not terribly sure if it would be allowed either.
