Is there an app to limit how fast specific downloads come in at?

For big files, like Linux images, I want to be able to limit my download bandwidth - instead of using a whole 350k, I want it to use, say, 100k or 50k, so it won't eat up my connection. This way I can have files downloading in the background and still be able to do other stuff normally. I use Firefox most of the time, is there a plugin or application that would let me do this?

You could do that if you were using BitTorrent.

Maybe you're looking for something like NetLimiter?

Can BitTorrent handle files from HTTP and FTP sites? I'm mostly interested in slowly downloading various linux distributions etc.

Ooh, NetLimiter looks good. Not sure if I want to spend $30 on it though...

Check out a network function called Quality of Service (QoS). It's implemented in Win2K/XP (need to enable under services), and some routers have support for it. You'll want to use one or the other to throttle (limit) bandwidth.

Edit: spelling

No. Entirely different.

I'm sure somebody knows of a freeware alternative to NetLimiter, but that's the only one I know of off hand that does what you're thinking of.

Get Right and FlashGet both have speed limiters for downloads. You can adjust the download speed to what ever you like.
