Is there an answer.. wire for 2

I have my home wired for our local network, with the router in my office
My wife's office upstairs is wired for her computer, she now has a laptop computer and wants to share information with her desktop. I would be next to imposiple to add another wire to her office.

Is there a way to connect two computers to one ethernet port on the router? and have those computers communicate.

Or would a laplink cable be the best way to do this?

Dean..

If the splitter thingie (the above Post), work. It is the cheapest solution.

Otherwise:

If the Desktop and the Laptop have USB ports, you can buy a USB network unit; it is a USB cable with little dangle on it. It very easy to install, and it will tap the Network for the Laptop from the Desktop (cost about$40).

The Best solution is to add Wireless capability.

You need an Access point to plug to your HUB/Switch, and a wireless card in the Laptop.

It is really cool to surf wireless but it is a costly endeavor ? above $300.

WIreless would certainly be convenient but best solution is an opinion. If you want the cheapest route and the laptop stays near the desktop upstairs then just add a cheap hub and get an inexpensive PCMCIA NIC for her laptop.

So I can use the feed to her office to connect the old 8-port hub I have laying around and then tie both her desktop and laptop to the hub. This seems to be a great solution..

Thanks..

Ktwebb you are right, ignore the word Best.

If you have all the hardware available, the additional hub is quick solution.

Just make sure that the connection is correct concerning the cable and the ports i.e. straight or Crossover connection

I would agree with the hub solution. It would be cheaper than the others. Though the wireless is cool, specially for the laptop, so she could do her work from anywhere in the house.
