Is there a OS you can recommend except...

Any major linux distribution
Any microsoft brand windows OS

???????????????????????????????????????

im assuming you meant on wintel architecture but ill mention mac OS anyway. its very different from windows but very simple to use. i use linux, windows, and mac os and i love them all. theyre all just different. maybe you can be more specific as to why you dont want to use those two OS's.

I'm gunna suggest FreeBSD...
It is a unix-like OS, has great support, is extremely robust and there is only one FreeBSD, unlike the countless number of linux distrobutions. (granted there is an OpenBSD and NetBSD) Additionally, it can take advantage of the huge amount of linux software out there (linux compatability) and it's cool 😉 I say go for it.

I know exactly what you want.

You want an OS that is reasonably modern, reasonably well-supported, but something none of your friends have heard of.

I recommend AtheOS.

It is Unix-like, but shares no code with the BSDs or the Linuces.
