939 is more for servers if you ask me. 754 is best for gaming. let me look into it some more and give you some benchmark links. I know for a fact that there was a test done plating the game DOOM between the two. Thee amd 64 3200+ 754 scored BETTER then the amd 64 3500+ 939. This is my quess. this article came out a while ago.

Most socket 929 mobo's are more "future-proof", as, according to AMD, the dual cores Athlon64 can run on these mobo's.

939 supports dual channel. For things like compression (WinRAR) memory bandwidth is a big issues.

Also 939 will support Toledo, so for next-gen games (Unreal Engine 3) and audio/video encoding 939 is a great choice.

For multitaskers, Toledo is going to wipe Intel of the map. ^^

Agreed with Promethply and Ribbon.. Go 939.

AMD's roadmaps show that the only new CPUs for Socket 754 after this year will be Sempr0ns. 939 will be their flagship desktop socket.

HTH.

Since the price difference isn't all that great, I'd go 939 unless I was seriously strapped for cash.
The S939 has more headroom, S754 isn't going anywhere, not to mention you do get a decent performance boost, of course that varies depending on your usage.

Why not just get a cheapo S462?
Should be more than sufficient and extremely cheap.

Well I already built the system.

a64 2800
biostar K8VGAM
512mb wintec pc3200
WD 80 gig hdd
CDRW/DVD COMBO SONY CRX320E BLACK
CD MS|WIN XP HOME
crappy case with generic 300 W psu
I am a little displeased with the onboard video but other than that it seems to perform very well.
