Is there an adapter for a 5.1 speaker to a 2 channel PC?

greetings,

I recently bought a Logitech Z-640 5.1 speaker system. I thought that since my computer uses the nForce chipset with a 5.1 sound that they would be compatible. However, I found out that my computer only has one port (green) for speaker output whereas the Z-640 needs three (one green, black, and pink). So basically, my rear speakers don't work. Is there an adapter out there or some other kind of solution that can get this setup to work? Or would I need to buy a 5.1 sound card?

Any help would be appreciated with this one. Thanks.

you have an nforce mcp southbridge without soundstorm. you should be able to buy some miniplug splitters at radioshack for cheap. just make sure they are stereo splitters and not mono.

Yes, but you might as well just get a cheap SBLive 5.1 for like 20$. It would sound worlds better.

Also what motherboard are you running... you might have the connectors confused as they switch.

thanks for the suggestions. i heard the nForce was very good for sound and that a sound card is unnecessarily. what is this miniplug splitter called? would it allow sound through the rear speakers (currently no sound comes through them)?

Actually, what I meant to say was my Logitech has three cables (green, black, pink). My computer only has one green port. So is there an adapter there a 3-in-1 adapter that can combine these three cables into the one port on my PC?

Dude...

What mobo do you have?
I am running 5.1 on an Abit NF7-M (without Soundstorm)
It has the Realtek 6ch. audio chip. Some of them you have to plug into the mic and line input for speaker outs.....
You sure yours doesn't work that way?

Sheesh, I try to get some sleep and you guys are going to doom this poor no0b to 2-channel replicated sound when he has the bloody equipment needed for 5.1? :p

skho - Download the nForce chipset drivers from nVidia if you haven't already, then go into the nVidia Audio control panel (in your tray) - turn on the "?" button to help you find it, and go to tab 2 and click on "Speaker Wizard".

Now, from your Z-640s to your motherboard:

Green -> "Speaker Output"
Black -> "Line Input"
Pink -> "Microphone"

The plugs on your board should be colour-coded to match, but "Line Input" or "Microphone" might be blue.

Follow the speaker wizard, answer the yes/no questions, and you will very shortly be presented with 5.1 channel audio.

Edit - Even if this is an original nForce 220/420, their MCP handles 6-channel as well.
