Is there a way to use two video cards, one for 3D, one for 2D?

I'm not too impressed with the 2D-ness of my Radeon 9700. I'd like to pick up a Matrox PCI card and use it for 2D. Could I just get a KVM switch and use the 550 for 2D, and the 9700 for 3D? My monitor has 2 inputs, so I wonder if I could just put one into each card and do it that way?

Thoughts?

I run dual video cards both 4 2D and 3D. My Ti4600 is my primary 2D card with 3D utilising Direct 3D and OpenGL. My secondary card is a 3Dfx Voodoo Banshee PCI which i mainly use for old glide games. As long as there are no driver conflicts or API conflicts, all should work fine.
