I want to get rid of this crap...I would be happy to disable it completely vs uninstalling...

it keeps showing up when you outlook express when checking email...I do not let it get on the internet and have disabled it in IE 6

can this be removed without screwing winxp pro

Yep, it can be done, quite easy actually. Mods, if you're watching, I vote this gets added to the faq if its not there already.

Click on Start, Run, and paste this into the box:

rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %WinDir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

That'll uninstall it, and prompt for a reboot.

After Installing Service Pack 1, there is a very easy way. Just go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and click on the box for adding/removing Windows components. Windows Messenger is there - just uncheck the sorry bastard. :)

i think for pre-Sp1 XP u can edit syssoc.inf located in the system32 dir. just remove the "HIDE" string next to the desired component and then you can remove it thru the control panel
