Is there a way to transfer a complete install to another PC?

Im currently out of town with both my laptops. I have one with rise of nations installed on it. Is it possible to extract the laptop with rise of nations and place it on my other laptop WITHOUT the installation CD?

Thanks guys. I figured it would seem to be an impossible task. I Only asked because well, ya know the internet knows magic. thanks again.

you can, it depends on whether it works on not. newer windows OSs will respond better to a hardware change than older ones.

if you're curious, just use acronis true image (free trial) or something to make an image of 1, then restore that image to the other. the 1st bootup will be 'interesting' 😱

Depends on the game. I can move my Sony games around to different machines no problem (Galaxies, everquest2, etc) because all the .dlls and crap are at the installation location. My advice? Try it and see. I've done this with many titles. Some work, others don't, and until you try you'll never know.

i've moved my installation of lineage 2 across 4 different PC's. always the same installation.

I'm confused, the first couple of replies suggest you want to extract the whole O/S,
but then other members are hinting you want to just copy the installation folder of the particular game over?

I'm sure just copying the game folder and running the .exe on a new computer is possible.

If you want to take it a step further, you can isolate the registry keys that operate with that game and save them to a .reg file, then load that reg file on the computer you want to play it on. That's basically a full blown installation short of having it listed in Add/Remove Programs.

Yes, games/programs that make their own registry changes are the most likely to fail a simple copy.

Best bet is to try. Copy the entire program files\(game) folder over, export the relevent registry keys from HKLM\software\(game) and give it a shot. If you launch it and it yells about missing files attempt to locate and move them to the correct location (like system32). Its likely that it wont work but you really dont have anything to lose except the time to try.

(and just to piss some other people off)
Steam FTW! 😀
