Is there a way to stop text being converted into emoticons in Windows Live Messenger?

Sometimes I need to write something in brackets which has an emoticon associated with it. I can't write what I want to properly without the emoticon showing up. I don't use custom emoticons either so I can't change the keyboard shortcut for the default ones. I still want to be able to see emoticons from others, and I only want to be able to put an emoticon into a message from the menu.

Tools->Options->Messages->Show emoticons or Tools->Emoticons->Unpin

Those are the only options I could find, and Help doesn't cover pinning or unpinning.
