Is there a way to soften jeans?

Wash them with fabric softener...

or, beat them with a rock on the ground. Your choice.

I hate this when buying a new pair of jeans. I just wear them everyday and don't wash them for a week, and leave them crumpled up on the floor instead of hanging them up, haha.

I air dry my jeans so they don't shrink. But after they've dried I throw them in the dryer, on air only, for few minutes with a fabric softener. They come out pretty soft.

Well here's a better question: why are designer jeans so much softer than jeans I buy at Gap? Is it some treatment? Or inherently better/softer denim?

As far as I know, those types of jeans are considered a "worn" wash. Whatever process they do to the fabric makes them softer.
I would not consider that just designer jeans have this. Other stores like Hollister and A&F have the same options for "washes" on their jeans.

It's much better fabric. Look closely at it, completely different weave.

Here's an EVEN BETTER question:

Is the wash something I can duplicate at home?

My Gap jeans are pretty damn comfy - equal level with the A&F jeans. They don't hold a candle to my Lucky's though, but you can feel the difference in denim on them.

I love my Gap jeans too and wouldn't pay the extra 150$ for jeans a little softer, but if I can put the jeans I own through a rock tumbler or something to make them softer I will. =D
