Is there a way to share monitors via software app?

All it should take is VNC on both machines. You can connect to the second machine to control it, but minimize the window that it shows up in. You can then (theoretically) move your mouse over to the other screen as if it was a second monitor.

I have done it before on my mac, but I am not sure if that software was XP compatible.

Ok, the Mac software is called ScreenRecycler. Apparently this coupled with other tweaks and 'hacks' will give a person a huge amount more screen real estate.

On Windows, there is an app called MaxiVista that should do what you want. It only works on Windows machines, so if you have a mac, you will need another program.
