Is there a way to share buffer in SETI?

If not, how about a personal proxy that can fetch reserve work unit for the client?

Oh my... SETI will not install on a crack rack that does not have a video driver. It requires at least 256 color. I have a couple of Win2K dual cpu setup running without a video driver - no compatible driver exists. I guess this will remain strictly RC5.

the command line version of setiathome can run without video drivers. its text only. but don't quote me on that. there are programs such as setiq and setidriver which will create buffers of work units. setiq runs as a proxy server on a main computer, and is better for racks or lots of networked computers. setidriver essentially keeps track of a bunch of work units it makes by spawning multiple clients. works well for a few computers, only the one computer can draw off its own supply of units.

I would suggest SETIQ for sure for a crack rack. In the proxy setting of each of the SETI clients, point it to the local IP address of the computer running SETIQ, with a port of 5512. Someone else can tell you the correct switch to use witht the CLI client to do this. 🙂

SETIQ according to the link works with SETI@home version 2. I'm using version 3.03 GUI, will that work?

Is anyone using SETIGate? It supposed to cache workunits. Is that similar to SETI Q?

SetiQ works with all the clients except for v3.03. You'd need the text client of v3.03 and SetiDriver.🙂

setigate and setidriver seem to operate on the same principle, ie they set up a server and distribute work units. setigate works with multiple email addresses is the difference, afaik. and setiq is freeware while setigate is crackware.

What is a crackware?

I just read in another thread by ColinP that the version I'm using is much slower than any previous version. The link in that thread talked about version 3.03 applying more science in processing of the workunits, thus making it much longer - double the usual time. They justified the new clients by saying it has a better chance of finding ET.

Where can I download the version 3?

Is version 2 better for finishing work units faster?

Well, you can use the v3.0 clients, but you'll have to switch to v3.03 pretty soon anyway. It's up to you. 🙂

crackware is what we'ved termed software that has payment by cracking units. setigate attributes the 10th unit for each email address cracked to the maker of setigate. so its a one time fee of 1 work unit.

I think I remember reading awhile ago that SETI will no linger count WU's that have been processed witha caching program? Is this jsut with V. 3.03 or what?

Seti will take wu's that have been cached. Here's the deal. Client v3.03 is using a different dns address than all the clients before it. Caching software such as setiQ still gets it's wu's from the old dns so in turn setiQ won't work with v3.03 until it's updated. Hopefully the author of the program will do that.

Right now both dns address' are still active. But when seti decides to stop taking results (which will be in the very near future) from all clients except for v3.03 then they'll kill the old dns address so when the other clients try to connect to get wu's they won't be able to find the server.

If you want to cache wu's using v3.03 then I know SetiDriver works with the new client. My suggestion to anyone just starting out would be to go ahead and get v3.03 and caching software that will work with it to save the hassle of having to upgrade in the near future. I myself am waiting to upgrade to v3.03 until either setiQ is updated or I break down and try SetiGate. I just hate to have to redo everything again.:frown:

Yeah taht sucks. I finally got SETIgate running which is pretty kewl actually I like the gui interface and once you re-install Seti@home it work great. I dont want to go cli unless I have to, cuz the reason I can run it at work is because it runs in screensavers mode, I may go cli at home I jsut hope it wont itnerfere with my everyday stuff. I got a P2 450 w/ 256MB ram so I sh9ould be fine.

Seti takes up less than 16mb's of ram and will surrender the cpu cycles when you need them so you should be fine on your home machine. BTW the cli version is much faster than the gui.🙂
