Is there a way to optimize word documents?

We have a microsoft word document that is 20 pages long and after multiple revisions, it has ballooned to 40 megs in size. Is there some type of software that can optimize a microsoft word document? I am sure there is repetative formatting and empty meta tags or something that is giving it that size. It does not have that many images in it.
