IS there a way to make gmail my default email client in my device manager?

I keep running across articles and pictures on the internet that have some sort of email feature, supposedly, which never seems to work very well. It suggests that I need to set up an email program with my device manager. I have a feeling it is expecting something like Outlook, and not a webased program like gmail.
