Is there a way to know if a RAM stick fits my laptop?

My brother sent me 16GB of RAM, and I have no idea if it will fit or suit my laptop. What should I look for before I start taking things apart and being disappointed?

Model of your ram.
Maker - Type - Speed.

First, find out the DIMM type (DDR2, DDR3, DDR4), and the clock speeds, and then what type of DIMM your laptop takes (which can be basically ascertained in 99% of the cases, by knowing what CPU is in it), and how many slots your laptop has.

For older laptops, as Larry said, determine which generation RAM. Look at RAM-maker web-sites to match laptop/mobo/processor to a RAM model and desired speed. Crucial is the one I used. You could also check with G.SKILL, Patriot, Team, Corsair and other sites and find a configurator link matching RAM and computer. I would be fairly sure the RAM type will be called SODIMM, but I don't own a recent laptop and haven't looked at memory kits . . .
