Is there a way to have more than 4 IDE devices in your machine?

i have 4 hard drives that i want to put in my machine. all from past hot deals, and i dont like them being wasted and collecting dust.

problem is all 4 ide slots are used. 1 for my main hd (120 gig), 1 for my cendyne 52x burner, 1 for my dvd player, and 1 for my 250meg zip drive.

if i buy a Promise card, would that add 6 more slots, or will it REPLACE my onbaord IDE thus only 6 slots total?

cool..any links to inexpensive ones? and which do u recommend? or will any do and get the lowest price?

2402 Off Topic and Hot Deals posts I assume 😀

"OEM," as opposed to "Retail" = Original Equipment Manufacturer, Also known as "Brown-Box" "White Box" and "Item only"

It means it is intended to be used inside another product warranted by that product's manufacturer instead of the original manufacturer. If you buy a PC from Dell and the Western Digital HDD dies, Dell has to replace it. Not WD.

It is sold at a discount with a failure percentage guarantee to major distributors with little to no documentation or accessories (No box, manual, cable or bag of screws with extra jumpers). These always find their way to all the online shops and is usually warranted by them as an individual item without using it in another product.

Jedi, that IDE card has 2 slots, which is pretty standard for this kind of add in card (though a few only have 1). They act just like the IDE slots on your motherboard except that they communicate through the PCI bus. Each connector/slot can have 2 hard drives or CD/DVD drives connected to it just like for the ones on the motherboard. Adding this IDE controller card to a PCI slot will allow you to connect up to 8 devices instead of the standard 4 without it.

The Promise cards do not support CD-ROM drives. At least they didn't used to 🙂

It's not that they aren't capable, just the BIOS is a converted RAID card BIOS with no support for detecting and configuring ATAPI devices (Just look at the options in one).
