Is there a way to get a serial port or any other port to trigger an external relay?

Ok heres the whole story. I need a bunch of switches to switch effects in my guitar rig in and out of the loop. I know of things that do this but they are very expensive. I have the know how to wire everything up once I get working switches. The problem I have is activating the switch somehow. I have board that sends MIDI messages. I need to translate that somehow into a relay opening and closing. Any ideas in how to do this beyond getting the midi into the computer?

I've never seen those 2 particular units before but they aren't cheap, much like the other stuff I've seen... :(

stab in the dark since i'm not visualizing your end application, but doesn't the X10 stuff do something with might be a usefull step with their automation software/hardware? granted its not a direct approach, but might be a roundabout solution in there if you wanna waste the time :/
