1) marry into the gates family?
2) Go to work for Microsoft?
3)ask a friend who is in school to buy it for you?

If your goal is to be legally licensed, then an academic license won't accomplish that goal unless you qualify for the academic license yourself.

If you know a student/teacher, you should be able to get a cheap copy under an academic liscence. But, each student/teacher is only allowed to purchase one copy of each particular product, and (as i've been told) their name goes on a register. So if they've already bought a copy of XP, you cant use that idea.

Otherwise, get it OEM. Im just not sure how well OEM copies of XP handle system upgrades....

Legally, aren't you required to stop using them as soon as you're not a student anymore? :)

supposedly, thats part of the deal, to stop using your academic lisenced copy after you end school. However, i've bought a used PC once from a college student in which his academic copies of software were still on :). Legally, who's responsible? I didn't KNOW for sure that they were academic at the time of purchase. :-D

most buy their academic copy, showing a student ID card at the bookstore. Pony up the $100 for a Y power adapter and an OEM copy of windows from your favorite online retailer.

You might as well pirate it at that rate, as you're breaking the EULA either way.

Unless you are a student buying your own copy for your own personal use (and the license generally still is legal for that specific piece of software after you graduate), you are not legal using academic versions of MS software.

I don't think even microsoft expects everyone to get a legitimate license of their product, regardless of what the law or the EULA says. They advertise their student/teacher copies of Office a lot, allow anyone to buy it (some stores may check, but definitely not all) and allow multiple computers to use one license as well.

As for getting a legal copy of windows xp for cheap, guess your only way is to buy it used, since enrolling in school isn't exactly trouble-free, and you have to stay a student to have it remain legal. The way to get a legit new copy is to buy OEM with a power adapter or fan or whatever, I guess. I've always wondered to what extent that really satisfies the conditions of OEM sales, but MS doesn't seem to have much of a problem with it right now.

probably show a student ID. You realize, that if you are not a student or a teacher, that copy of XP is NOT legit....

I was able to check it out at the computer lab from my school, the liscence they have allows for every student to have one registered copy of xp. My work also has the same aggreement and the reason being is because they don't want anyone accessing information from there web sites or exchange server or vpn without the latest security updates.
