Is there a way to fix windows file searching?

On my computer, the file searching feature in Windows Vista is completely worthless. I have a folder filled with pictures and I'm trying to sort them into other folders. I typed "steve" in the search box - nothing found. That's strange since the first 3 files in that directory start with "steve" in the file name.

I don't even know where to begin with this. I didn't change any Vista settings related to indexing or searching. The OS is pretty much 100% default settings.

You have to set up indexing to index where you want to search, it doesn't automatically index everything.

By default it should be indexing user files, but not in user created files in other locations like the root. Once the location is added you also have to let it be indexed. Failing this, you can open up the advanced pane and search in 'non indexed locations' but obviously that will take a little longer.
