Is there a way to fix Laptop LCDs? - it's too dark

I have been using my laptop everyday for the last 2 years and I noticed the screen is so much darker than my desktop LCD. I put brightness/contrast to highest setting, but it's still dark. It's an Dell 8100 Inspiron laptop, is there a way to fix this?
