Is there a way to find out who a license plate is registered to?

I was leaving my work parking lot yesterday and was sitting at the traffic light waiting to exit the parking lot and get onto the road and I look over next to me and the guy in the next car is trying discretely (but failing) to sneak some sips of a Bud Light while he was driving. First I gotta ask. . .where did he get the beer? They don't sell beer at my work. And if he can't even wait until he gets off company property to crack one open, man that guy has problems. But now he has bigger problems because I got his license plate number. What I need to find out is if he is in fact a company employee or not. He could have been a client or something. So I want to find out if there is a way to find out who the car is registered to so I can look up the name in the company directory and see if he is an employee. There are, of course, strict policies against drinking or being intoxicated on company property. So not only was he breaking the law but he was violating company rules as well. This kind of a$$hole really burns me up. :|

[EDIT] I live and work in Maryland if it matters.

How do you know he was intoxicated?

While I agree that open container laws prevent people from getting drunk in their car, if you think about it, if somebody can drink a beverage while driving, and someone can drink a beer and then drive, what's wrong with someone drinking a beer while driving? Especially a low alcohol beer like Bud Light.

I'd recommend peeking in his bedroom window to see if he's violating sodomy laws as well.

^^ ??

Pretty hard to see that alongside him from his car unless he has superman vision or something. :)

Just keep an eye out for him some other day at work (not sure the size of the company and shifts and whatnot)?

Go directly to HR or whoever would handle it at your company.

If they care, they'll deal with it. If they don't care... then it's probably not worth your time caring, either.

Sounds like we have a snitch. Was the guy driving? If so call the cops (yeah I know you can't even have a beer in your car if it's off) but going to HR? Snitch city my friend. I hope you like the way everyone is gonna be looking at you after this...

It is illegal first of all. And for personal reasons I take drunk driving (or even potential drunk driving) very seriously. The fact this guy couldn't even wait to get off work property before opening a can indicates a drinking problem. He had to have bought the beer ahead of time and stored it in his car or something because they don't sell beer at our work anywhere. Witnessing this behavior makes me think he probably drinks and drives often. It is only a matter of time before he might kill somebody. I know he drives around where I live because I live close to work and I have a 2 month old daughter.

I couldn't see that as we were both in our cars driving at the time I saw this.

YES he was driving. . .Read the OP much? We were sitting at a traffic light waiting to exit the work parking lot. .
That is beside the point. . .this thread isn't to debate DUI laws and stuff. . .I just want to know if there is a way to find out who owns the car. I might confront him in a non-aggressive way and let him know I saw him and warn him not to do it any more. If he's a dick I'll report him to his manager. I don't want to work with people who drink and drive! But I don't know if he's an employee or not so I want to find out. If he isn't I'm going to just forget about it. But first I have to find out who the license plate is registered to.

If you have a security division report it to them as well as HR.

If HR states that it was not a employee, then report it to the local PD.

I've had a couple road sodas after work or along day. I would just leave him alone unless he was showing signs of obvious intoxication. for most regular beer drinkers 1-3 beers does absolutely nothing.

That is not the point. . .the point is he probably drinks and drives often if he can't even wait to leave the work parking lot before he opens a beer. If you need a beer so bad you must resort to drinking while driving, which is explicitly against the law (open container laws and such), you have a drinking problem. Again that is beside the point though. I just want to know if anybody knows a way to find out license plate information, meaning who a plate is registered to, without having to hire a P.I. or pay. Is this considered public information or private information?

i've done it a handful of times in my life. I guess that means I have a drinking problem. Better hit up AA tonight.

You should probably just ifnd something more productive to do with your life or go to the police academy so you can bust criminals full time.

Your word vs his. No one will act on that. They certainly won't give out private information to some random person.

How about because it's really freaking illegal?

Let's say, just for the sake of argument, that he had bought a 6 pack the day before and went fishing, he drank a few and then when he got home last night he forgot to take the cooler out of his car. He finished work today and when he gets to his car, he sees the cooler. It is hot out and a beer would taste really good. "One beer won't impair my driving, it would be just like having a coke", he thinks as he opens his beer. He finishes his beer on the way home before he stops at the orphanage and treats all the kids to an ice cream cone. Then he goes to the park and picks up some litter, as he is finishing up there he spots a lost puppy and and spends the rest of the night finding it's home.

I think my scenario is just as likely as "he probably drinks and drives often if he can't even wait to leave the work parking lot before he opens a beer", or If you need a beer so bad you must resort to drinking while driving, which is explicitly against the law (open container laws and such), you have a drinking problem.
You wouldn't want to get an orphan-ice-cream-giving, litter-picking-up, lost-puppy-returner in trouble, would you????
I think not.

Yes, but I am trying to be logical about it and not jump to irrational conclusions. Why does he need that beer so bad he can't wait till he gets home but must break the law? Where did he get the beer? It wasn't at work I guarantee.
