Is there a way to find out which version a windows xp cd-key is for?

I know of no way to determine it JUST by examining the Key number.

Nothing else on the case? A part number, perhaps? If there's a COA sticker that came with it or was attached to a PC case, then it's OEM, because only OEM versions come with COA stickers.
