is there an option so that you have windows update scan your system, and it downloads the files but doesn't automatically run them?

Try this link:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

In the right hand window should be an option for it to scan your computer for updates. I am running win2k and after it scans and finds updates to install you pick which ones you want to d/l and then it installs them automatically. I don't know if it works the same for 98 or if there is a way around this. You can delete updates later on if you are having problems with them.

Opps sorry I didn't see that Insidious had provided a link already.

yeah, i want to have it download those updates, but not install them. so i can keep them all on a cd and update the laptop without internet connection, or when msft stops supporting it.
