I swear I saw somewhere that you can copy a file from your ICQ folder and put it on another machine so that the new machine will have the same contact list.

Anyone know if this is true?

Protecting your contact list
If you lose ICQ due to a hard disk failure or other failure, it?s easy to reinstall it, but what about your contact list?

ICQ stores your contact list and a history of your communications in a database in a folder called NewDB (or just DB in older versions of ICQ). You can resurrect your contact list provided you first back it up. To do so, open Windows Explorer and locate the database folder (it?s usually in Program Files\ICQ\NewDB). Copy the entire folder to a new location.

To restore the list, first complete the ICQ installation and then copy the contents of the backup folder into Program Files\ICQ\NewDB, overwriting any existing files.

You can use the same technique to copy your contact list to another computer running ICQ.

Yes, you can. Go to your ICQ directory, copy the "2000b" folder (assuming you have ICQ 2000b) and then when you put it on another machine put that copied folder into the ICQ directory (allow it to overwrite the 2000b folder on the new install of ICQ on that computer). Then, run DBConvert, it's a program located in the ICQ directory, and then you're set.

I do it all the time, I have never had any problems transferring the DB file.

There is a UIN folder that has a file inside that is my ICQ number .UIN.

back up your "db" directory. then re-install icq. then, close icq and drag your "db" directory back over your new install. usually works for me. (but i WISH icq made it easier)

Ok, the database folder should be called 2000b. Just copy the entire folder into the ICQ dir. of your new ICQ installation.

Anyway too true, and it saves a bunch of time.

btw EA, have you tried the latest Q ? In an attempt to cut the bloat they have a totally different install process now. Still bloated to buggery but better than it is in 2000.

No, I haven't tried the new ICQ. I'll probably install it on my machine at home, tho.

yep, done it numerous times.
i just copy the whole directory though, don't wanna start messing with individual files. but if icq is already installed on the other machine you may delete users on that machine, so best go with the other suggestions if the other machine already has it.
