Is there a way to DIY recover data from a dead USB stick??

I have a 1G USB stick that is not powering up or being seen by the OS on any computer I plug it into. I'm hoping that its a power issue and that the data is still intact.

Is there anyway to recover the data at home or do I have to send it out to with some $'s to someone online?
