is there a way to disable XP's native CD burning capabilities?

you know how you can drag and drop files into the cdr/dvdr drive and xp will automatically burn the media? is there a way to disable that?

I don't think you can disable it, but, there is no requirement to use it. It is the Drag & Drop function listed when you right click the burn drive.

If you install a commercial burner such as Nero or Roxio, etc., they will disassociate the burner from software functions other than themselves.

I have run XP Pro on 3 systems now for close to 5 years, and have three burners - and never have used that feature in XP or had it even bubble up to be used.

I believe it is simply a user's choice. So, why not just ignore it?

Open Windows Explorer
right click the CD-RW drive (or DVD-RW)
select Properties
Select "Recording"
Uncheck "Enable CD Recording on this drive"
Apply

Done

it's not a matter of which software, it's keeping people from burning files from the network and doing bad things with them.
