Is there a way to disable that stupid "Windows" key without ripping it off my keyboard?

I keep hitting the friggin' thing when playing Day of Defeat (Half-Life mod) which causes the sound to disappear when you go back in the game. I am about ready to rip the thing off with a screwdriver, but I was hoping there is a more elegant solution. Any help?

lol!! I had the same exact problem. I thought I was the only one that had a problem with the Windows key. I finally snapped one day after hitting it in counterstrike and my comp froze. I was 29/0... Ive posted questions about this. No one seems to have an answer. I took out my screw driver and went at it. I ripped both keys off and then jammed the screw drivers in and moved it around. Well the keys didnt really work after that. But my keyboard started having lots of problems. Like I press "F" and file search comes up. I was like sh*t! I just screwed up my nice IBM keyboard that isnt made anymore. I used a comcrap keyboard for a couple weeks. I jammed the screw driver in the IBM windows key holes again and then it started working fine again!!!! So you may have to resort to all of that. I hope to god someone doesnt say an easier way I could have done this ;) Good luck.

my friend popped his off, then pulled out a spring or a pin or something, then put the keys back on.

The sit there so you don't have big ugly holes in your keybaord, but they don't work.

My keyboard doesn't have the pesky Windows keys. ;)

Only thing that comes to mind is to run a resident utility that maps the windows keys to something harmless like scroll lock. Perhaps try something like Keyboard Express which I use. If you can assign a macro to the Windows right and left keys this might work. And this app consumes very few resources and I've never noticed a framerate drop in games.

EDIT: that swapkeys util on that page might also work but i'm not familiar with it.

Yeah, it was my start keys that were stuck down and causing the problems. But I managed to cut away that "membrane" part where the key presses down and it seems to be working fine now.

Yeah, woodie1 points out a proggie to kill their function.

I forgot if there are any programs to reassign them, if there are, I would just reassign them as extra CTRL or ALT keys.

Of course I don't have that problem.

Your IBM Model tactile click keyboards are still working great Andrew :) hehe Maybe you shouldn't have sold them :p

I'll need to check out that site. It's worse of a problem for me since I have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite (the ergonomic one) which has oversize Windows keys! I'm not sure what's happened lately to make me start hitting that key instead of "Z" (to stop bleeding in DoD :) ), but it's screwed up two games in the last two days.

Vinny: LOL! I'll stick with my ergonomic one, thanks. ;)
