Is there a way to authenticate hard tickets issued by ticketmaster?

You can attach a Cue Cat to a Palm Pilot that's connected to the TM Ashton Database. Scan in the bar code and you'll know within seconds.

That wouldnt necessarily verify the authenticity of the ticket, only that it had a valid barcode.

That wouldn't be difficult to produce, if the counterfeiter had a ticket they were working from.

You must have missed the part about the Ashton db.
