Is there a way that you can check if a cell phone # has text messaging capabilities?

the pound sign (#) has eight line endings, kinda like a spider has eight legs...maybe you can use that?
 
just send it a text message from another phone, if they get it, it works. as long as it isn't sprint it should work from any provider (although sprint is now supporting SMS)
