I've always shunned anything but 3com/USR modems for serious applications, & I've now found myself with a need for a modem to be used with multiple systems. I will not use an outdated standard like v.90 for my premium modem, but my "wish-list" modem that I thought 3com/USR would ALWAYS keep up to date is not on their list of v.92 upgradable modems (Even though every product they sell says you'll be able to upgrade to future standards, it isn't true!). You see, I need a USB modem for ease-of-use with multiple systems. I plan on it being the only modem in the house, meaning it will have to be a hardware controller-based modem. It also needs to be an "on the road diagnostics tool" meaning it will have to have both serial & USB connections. The advantage of having serial in addition to USB other than reverse compatability is that it pretty much guarantees that it's a rare controller-based USB modem
Now, I just need to find a respectable brand making such a device. The device I'm interested in can be seen HERE. I may just be forced to buy it instead of a v.92 modem, though I could really use the increased upstream bandwidth!
