Is there a thread here that explains the basic differences in AA techniques?

If not, can this be one? I see the options in games and various discussions about how well cards handle the different options but not much on what the techniques do.

In general, there is no best method, as everything has advantages of disadvantages, and you'll find some people prefer different types. You could even include VSR and DSR in the list. Those are closest to downsampling or Ordered Grid Super Sampling.
