Is it possible to win every game just like Freecell and Minesweeper or all luck? The only time I win is luck. I know most of us had played this one time or another? Got strategy? Post up please. :) I can't figure it out myself. :(

Hmm.. I've always heard that it was possible to win every time. Never tried though, solitaire is my absolute last resort game when I have nothing else to do.

So luck then huh? Damn! I was under the impression that I am so stupid because I can't figure out that game. Haha... :D

Think about it. Cards are randomly distributed and you may never be able to get to key cards that are necessary to win.

I have developed several effective strategies....

1) keep count (1-3) of cards pulled from deck so that you can anticpate which cards will come up next pass. For example, if you pull one card out, you know that the of the next three deck cards you will have the bottom card up next time.

2) take cards from the deepest stacks first.

3) Leave cards in the deck IF it will help you pull out the aces on the next pass.

4) memorize what cards are in the deck, and what order they are.

Luck is still a major factor, but these strategies can help win using vegas scoring.

Actually, I've also heard that every game is "winnable."

When I'm really on top of my game, I can win maybe a little better than half.

There is a certain amount of luck to it, but if you play draw 3 / vegas scoring you can minimize your losses / maximize your winning with smart play.

No, not possible to win all. It's a game of chance more than anything.

My understanding is that all Freecell games are solvable. Minesweeper, however, depends to an extent on luck.

Yes all Freecell are solvable. Too easy actually. You are wrong about Minesweeper however. Minesweeper is the easiest of them all! Just a matter of how quick you solve it.

Minesweeper is not inherently winnable. Your first few choices are random and can easily hit a mine...

I should append that previous list to include:

5) use the undo key whenever it makes sense to.

6) often you build up on the Aces early, but are unable to solve, UNLESS you draw back off the aces. This is especially true in the 3rd pass of the deck.

7) Note that its better to use cards off the play stacks than out of the draw deck. So if you have two red tens, one in the draw and one on a stack, use the one off the stack.

Not all games of freecell are winnable.
Link

"FreeCell is the enormously popular solitaire game included with Windows 95. Because all cards are visible at the start of the game, it is almost entirely a game of skill. Almost all FreeCell positions can be won. The most notable exception is the game #11982 in Microsoft FreeCell and Pretty Good Solitaire."

I used to be something of a freecell junky, but lost interest when I found this out (although I had suspected it).

I came across a list of unwinnable freecell games at some point.

I find it is mainly a game of luck:

Every card you pull from the deck or the piles has an adverse effect later on in the game whether you know it at the time. Example: You have two 4s laid out on piles and you have a 5 to place 1 of them on. Under each 4 is a random card that may or may not benefit you. You pick the furthest to the right 4 and end up with a card that totally wrecks your ability to progress in the game. You will never know what was under the other 4, but there is a good assumption that it probably would have helped you more than the one you picked. Same goes for pulling a card from the deck (where each card you pull effects which ones youll get next time around in 3card).

Some tips I usually go by (some of which already mentioned!):
1. Never stack away any cards into upper right unless you have a good reason to. Without reason, all cards should remain in piles (except aces).
2. If you get stuck and the game looks over, try to stack as many cards in the upper right as possible. Sometimes this will allow you to continue on, but if not, you can still break even.
3. Always pull from piles instead of deck when given the chance. (Cards get stuck at the bottom of piles very easily when you pull from deck a lot).

Try the cheat code!!! I don't remember what it was but it allowed you to draw 1 in draw 3 style. I think Minesweeper had a cheat code too where a certain pixel on the screen turned a color if there was a mine there or not.

You have spent time to learn that?
