Is there a universal name for these things, or does each company have it's own name?

Yes.

That said, I personally believe thumbdrive/flash drive are universally understood (although perhaps not universally accepted).

Co-workers ask me all the time what the name of it is, and I think I've given a different name each time.

It's always a pain to search some store websites since there is no standard name for them.

Jumpdrive seems the most popular here, even though people don't have an actual jumpdrive. I think memory stick is used, but it can be misleading because I think there really is something called a memory stick and it's not a USB drive. I've seem thumbdrive on AT a lot.

If I'm on a store's website, I usually find them by searching for USB drive...same w/Ebay. At B&M stores, they usually know what I'm talking about when I say USB drive
