Is there a "standard" for DVDRs?

I'd use an external HDD for casual backups. Save the REALLY important stuff to DVD. At 4.3GB each, you won't get very far if you try to backup everythig.
 
I've never had a coaster with Ritek G03 or G04 (after 200 discs). In the past I've used Memorex, Maxell, Verbatim, Panasonic, TDK and Pioneer media. I never burn above 4X but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with my success rate.
