Is there a special setting for LCD displays in Windows XP?

ClearType but XP's implementation of LCD subpixel font rendering is crap and it just makes the effect worse, unless your LCD is bad to begin with. A high contrast LCD with the normal font rendering should look decent.

Fact is that you hate Cleartype, not that it is bad... by the way it is enabled by default in IE7 on XP, and in Windows Vista.

So, how do I enable clear type?

1: right click desktop and select properties
2: click the appearance tab
3: click the effects button
4: Under...Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts - change it from standard to Clear Type

I prefer Cleartype on both my 24 inch LCD and on my 21 inch Trinitron CRT, however on my 2ed 21 inch CRT which is a shadow-mask it looks worse.

Using Clear Type with Large Fonts makes most things nice and readable.

Without it, just give up.
