Is there a solution to this ftp problem?

Almost anyone who has a broadband firewall know what I'm talking about. Connecting to an ftp site that is also behind a broadband firewall, and that runs on a nonstandard ftp port. We log on fine, but never get a dir listing. We've tinkered at length with the pasv settings to no avail. I guess when you use port 21, it automatically uses port 22 for the other side? But when you use a nonstandard port, it's random? And how do you poke a hole in the forewall for a random port?

So does anyone have a definative answer to this? Is that really the problem or am I just being thick?

Thanks in advance.
