Is there a socket A 650 mhz Athlon?

Hi:

I ordered a Duron 650 from an online store, but when it came and I looked at the chip (no box, already installed on mobo) the top read "Athlon" and CPUID reports it as an Athlon w/ 256 L2 cache. A little bit confused b/c I thought the first socket A athlons were 700 mhz.

Chip markings are:

A0650APT38
ADEA0023FPHW
91751380264

Also, anyone know how to tell what week the chip is?

Thanks,
Dan

I believe you go by this line :A0650APT38
Which would make it a week 38. I don't really know much about this though.

does CPUID know the difference between an Athlon and a Duron? (i can't remember the difference between the duron's and athlons l2's) the '650' does mean that it's officially 650mhz.. weird. i can't read the rest of tha markings though, i have forgotten what they are 😛 😱

ok, i found out how to decifer some of the code here

the 'A' means AMD Athlon Architecture
the 0650 = 650mhz
A = Socket A
P = 1.7V core
T = 90C maximum case temp
3 = 256kb L2
B(not an 8) = 200mhz fsb

I've never heard from any reliable source that these things existed, however, I have seen them for sale.

The Durons come marked as Durons, and the first letter of the first line is a D for Duron. What you have is a Week 23 Athlon 650. So perhaps these beasts do in fact exist.

you would think this chip would overclock well, but it doesn't really overclock much better than the week 23 durons (so far at least). I've gotten it up to around 850 before i start running into stability problems. I'm using a Taisol 733 w/ arctic silver.

anyways, i guess it is a 650 Athlon. weird. the core isn't the blue one though, so i'm assuming it doesn't have the copper interconnects. plus, the chip came with the L1 unlocked! i ordered a 650 duron w/ a chrome orb and instead they send me a unlocked 650 athlon w/ a Taisol. i'm not complaining though.

where did you get it from? If the price is right, I may consider getting myself a B-day present (as if I need a faster CPU).

ordered it from monarchcomputer.com. reason is they had great price on the msi k7t pro2A mobo, so i just ordered the cpu from them as well. weird thing is, they don't even list the 650 athlon on their product page. you might have to call them up. thing is, i don't think it's all that great a deal considering that you can get later week durons that clock to 950 or so and then you'd probably get better price/performance out of that.
