I actually use SetiBuffer (www.setibuffer.com) on most my machines. It's basically a stand alone client/cache that does pause the WU if you pull out the power plug (at least on my Thinkpad A22m)...
yeah i put a link in my quicklaunch, but i forget it sometimes (often). it shouldn't be hard to do, dnet did/does have the capability... maybe BOINC does?

If you're running XP, there's an option in Task Scheduler tasks to do that. So just create a task that starts SETI at startup, and stops it if battery power starts.
