I'm running low on space and I'd like to just grab a large drive and be done with it for another couple of years. Any idea when this thing will be available online?

Hitachi's is available now, but only through PC builders like Alienware on systems. I'm sure it won't be very long before they go public.

I need one of these too, my 2 300s and single 500 are getting full.

Those, its likely that 2 500GB Seagate drives will be cheaper than a single 1TB drive, Seagates 500GB drives are only around 140 right now.

Depending on the cost of the system & the 1tb drive, you might be better off buying a Dell with a 1tb drive in it, swapping out the drive, and reselling the system.

thats what i was thinking. the price for a standalone drive is probably going to be insane.

I don't think the price premium is not going to make it a wise financial choice in the beginning. If you just need some more space, why not get a 750GB drive?

I was thinking about why we are still using these 3.5"" Hard Drives. If they can make them so large, how come we cant go to a 2.5" hard drive as the standard drive?

Why ? ? The smaller something gets, the more it will usually cost.
In a Laptop you might want to pay extra for a lighter, higher performance unit.
But not in a desktop computer. There is plenty of room in there for the current 3.5" drives

now u need a market to fit all the atx case in the world with 2.5" bay or adapters...

my dl380 uses 2.5" sas drives already... 8 in each..

Hehe, he means lowering your chance of complete data loss. That is true unless you are going to have a full copy of all your data on another 1 TB drive.

Hitachi drives have been advertised for $415.99 earlier this week and were sold out almost instantly. I'd think it might be better though to think about two 1/2 TB drives such as the Seagate SATA drives that are being advertised by Fry's on the Internet and in stores for around $120 each recently.

2 500GB's in RAID-0 would be a lot cheaper at this point, but granted it doesn't rallky have the coolness factor of owning a 1TB drive. Just hope these bad boys go down in price when my current 1TB array fills up.

Also answer the question of data security on a RAID system, (A question that pops up ad nauseum) RAID-0 = potentially less secure... (If one drive fails all data = screwed) RAID-1 = twice as secure as a standalone drive (both drives would have to fail simulatenously in order to lose your data, however 2-500GB drives would only show up as 1 500GB drive). RAID-5, which I've never personally used yet seems ideal, you would have 3 drives, faster access, and more security (I believe two or more drives would have to fail simulatensouly as well to lose data, and 3 500GB drives would show up as 1 - 1TB drive)
