Is there a reason you Atheists feel the need to bash Christianity constantly? ***THREAD STILL ON TOPIC!!!***

Just a question. You love to say "Leave us alone with your beliefs." And we do. Do you see any proselytizing on these boards? No. Because we have agreed to your terms.

What do we get in return? Unprovoked attacks on our faith, which we cannot defend, because if we do, we are not acknowledged, and our defenses are passed off as "excuses and blind faith". Logic fails to take any grasp upon any religion discussion, yet it is you, not us who provoke the issue, every single time.

I, for one, am sick of it. You are an atheist. Have fun, I will not argue with you, but for some reason, you feel the need to reaffirm your ego by making some unwitty variant upon the statement "Christianity/the Bible is false", even when the discussion does not involve religion, or Christianity.

Grow up. ATOT is as much a community as it is a gathering of people, and I really want to see this whole vendetta against Christianity (not religion, mind you, just Christianity) ended. I like spending my time here just as much as the next guy, but every time I see a thinly veiled bash on Christianity (which is always unprovoked, of course), I am sickened.

You have your atheist leanings. Fine. I will not hold anything against you for that, and I won't spend my time preaching to you in vain. Just like you asked.

Now why don't you hold up your end of the bargain, eh?

They're trolling and you just inhaled a giant piece of bait. Just let it be.

It's gone on for far too long. It's getting ridiculous. We had this same thing happen with "gay", with a much smaller minority being insulted. But of course, it's open season on Christianity, all year long!

Probably because they see lots of Christians trying to force their beliefs on others.

I see none on AT. I see plenty of atheists trying to force their beliefs upon others. I have no personal ego-vendetta against atheism.

was this because of my thread?? or because of the thread about creation?

There have been (albeit quite rare) intelligent debates up here on religion.

It's the fanatical ones up here that incite the unrest.

on the babel fish:

"Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindboggingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as the final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God.

"The argument goes something like this: `I refuse to prove that I exist,' says God, `for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.'

"`But,' says Man, `The Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED.'

"`Oh dear,' says God, `I hadn't thought of that,' and promptly vanished in a puff of logic.

"`Oh, that was easy,' says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.

"Most leading theologians claim that this argument is a load of dingo's kidneys..."

quoting only because i just finished it and couldnt find a much shorter quote on God from the book quite as easily

They aren't going to stop. Many of the really vocal ones are 15 year olds sitting in their computer rooms trying to feel big.

What result are you after? A forum ban on blasting religion, similar to the one on making fun of gay people?

No. I want them to grow a spine. It's a bit steep, I know, but I still have a few shreds of faith in humanity. 🙂

Not on AT, but in RL. I'm a practicing Christian and I can see it.

An athiest that calls out a christian (or a believer of any religion) is just as bad, if not worse, than one of a religous background trying to force their religion on someone... I'm not athiest, i'm not religous.. in a sense.. I am a 50/50 mix of jewish and protistan (sp?) and I couldn't tell you what either believe. Do I condemn or disbelieve religion? No. Do I believe religion? No. I believe religion has run it's course, but for those who are still into it, more power to them. It does nothing for me.

ever wonder why major candidates for political office can't be athiest? its worse then being gay pretty much. and you speak of oppression.

its the christians who slapped god on the money, in the pledge during the 50's.. and at every chance they try to push god into government. public funding of religious institutions, religions schools, trying to get creationism taught, school prayer, etc etc etc. good ol pat robertson, spewer of hatred and intolerance got a couple hundred thousand from bush's faith based initiative. oppressed my ass.

the only oppression christians feel is the nagging feeling that someone out there doesn't like it and is trying to stop them from imposing their religion on everything and everyone.

Try to convert me to athiesm, go for it. Explain to me why you believe what you believe and give me the most convincing arguments you can for your world view. But just telling my I'm uneducated/ignorant/blind/etc. is nothing, gives me nothing to think about, prompts no growth towards or away from your view, just breeds resentment. Christians rarely use insults as their first course of defense and shouldn't use them even as the last, though unfortunately many will.

Props to you for starting this thread, Amorphus. I thought about it and then wrote it off as unproductive. But I'll have my say, since it's already here.

(BTW, I'm not talking about anyone who responded to any of my threads. I started those for the purpose of hearing some thoughts from others and I did nothing to provoke argument and no argument really started.)

I can't speak about my religion (even TALK about it, nothing to do with evangelizing) at work without recieving a warning and endangering my job. My high school aged friends could start a club revolving around any important or inconsequential factor of their lives so long as it's not their religion.

I'm not an atheist, nor am I a christian, but I do hate it when I see closed-mindedness on either side, which is when I drop my $.02 in. When people won't accept other people's views, that's when I speak up. This has happened a few times recently with a die-hard christian, so I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

well the work thing is kind like sexual harrassment. they don't want to see it devolve into hostility. perhaps they go to far, but they ere on the side of safety. its not the same as real oppression through the government. as for school clubs, my school had christian groups. and i live in california, so i don't know wha tyour talking about.

How does US government oppress atheists?

If you want to be a cult member thats fine by me. I dont care. I dont see the point in arguing religion either. Its endless and pointless.

All I know is I always win because I can.
